TYPE OF SECRET DISCOVERING NUSHU

Typeface/ Experimental /EDITORIAL

Nushu, the sole gender language devised by Chinese women during the 19th century, inspires this experimental design project. The characters often resemble elongated diamond shapes with delicate and consistent strokes, resembling mosquitoes or ants. Drawing from extensive research, rules have been established and adhered to. In this project, identical strokes in English typefaces correspond with those in Nushu.

The primary objective of this design is to explore the aesthetic potential of Nushu and examine its versatility. Thus, more intricate experiments have been undertaken. The designed typefaces are arranged in diamond formations, reminiscent of traditional Nushu, and used to spell out English words such as "Flower" and "Women."

English poetry is composed using this distinctive typeface, accompanied by editorial design. Poems occupy the left pages, while the right pages provide readers with space to interpret the content of the poetry.
